Bus franchising: Graham Simpson asks a straight question. Stephen Flynn avoids answering it.

Graham Simpson MSP challenged Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn over whether the Scottish Government intended to force bus franchising on communities that did not want it.

It was a straightforward question. But instead of answering it, Flynn accused Graham of opposing cheaper fares and better bus services.

The exchange exposed a fundamental weakness in the Government’s argument: the apparent belief that greater public control of buses will somehow automatically produce better services and lower fares.

But where is the evidence? Where is the detailed policy? And who will pay?

Promising cheaper fares and better buses is easy. Explaining how to deliver them is rather more difficult.

Graham’s question remains unanswered: will local communities have a genuine choice, or will Scottish ministers decide what is best for them?
