About Graham Simpson MSP

Introduction

I have represented communities across Scotland in the Scottish Parliament since first being elected in May 2016. Now serving the Central Scotland and Lothians West region, I bring more than a decade of parliamentary experience, alongside a longstanding commitment to public service, local communities and effective government.

Background

Before entering Parliament, I spent 25 years working in journalism, both as a reporter and sub-editor for local and national newspapers. That experience gave me a strong appreciation of the importance of asking difficult questions, examining the facts and holding those in positions of authority to account. My political career began in local government, where I served for ten years as a councillor in South Lanarkshire. It was an immensely rewarding experience that reinforced my belief in practical politics: listening to people, understanding the challenges they face and working to deliver meaningful improvements in their everyday lives.

At Holyrood

Today, I serve as Deputy Convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Transport Committee and as my party’s spokesperson for Transport and Tourism. These responsibilities place me at the heart of scrutiny and debate on issues that are fundamental to Scotland’s economy, infrastructure and future prosperity. Throughout my time at Holyrood, I have taken a close interest in how public money is spent, how government decisions are made and whether public services deliver value for the people who depend on them. My previous parliamentary responsibilities have included membership of the Housing Committee and the Public Audit Committee. I am also a member of the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body, which, under the chairmanship of the Presiding Officer, oversees the administration, resources and operation of the Scottish Parliament.

Priorities & Approach

My approach is straightforward: to scrutinise government, champion the interests of the communities I represent and work towards practical solutions that make a difference.
